Google's AI Answers Are Changing Local Search. Here's Where Your Customers Still Click.

If you run a dental practice, a contracting company, or any local service business, you have probably noticed Google looks different lately. Ask it "how much does a new roof cost" and you get a block of AI-written text at the top of the page before you see a single website. Business owners keep asking us the same thing: is this killing my website traffic? The honest answer is that it depends on what your customers are searching for. New data from this month makes that a lot clearer.

What the October 2026 data shows

On October 16, 2026, the SEO platform Rank.ai pulled 292 Google results pages for local service searches. The searches covered 10 industries, including plumbing, HVAC, roofing, dental, legal, auto repair, and electrical, in Austin, Chicago, and Phoenix, on desktop and mobile (Rank.ai).

Here is what they found:

  • 51.4% of those local service results pages showed an AI Overview.
  • 95% of cost questions ("how much does a new roof cost") showed one, and so did 100% of problem questions ("why does my breaker keep tripping").
  • Only 10% of "near me" searches showed an AI Overview, and 100% of them showed the local map pack.
  • "Best" searches ("best roofing company") showed an AI Overview 24.6% of the time, and service searches ("emergency plumber") 30% of the time.

So the AI answers mostly show up on research questions. When someone is ready to hire, Google still leads with the map and the business listings.

Why it matters: fewer clicks on research questions

When an AI Overview appears, fewer people click through to websites. Ahrefs studied 300,000 keywords and found that an AI Overview was linked to a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page, using December 2025 data (Ahrefs). Pew Research Center tracked the real browsing of 900 U.S. adults and found people clicked a traditional search result on 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, compared with 15% when it did not. Only 1% of visits included a click on a link inside the summary itself (Pew Research Center).

Google's chat-style AI Mode goes further. In a preregistered field experiment with 1,100 U.S. participants run in March 2026, researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Northeastern found that switching people's searches to AI Mode cut their click-through rate to outside websites by 18.8 percentage points (Wang et al., arXiv).

For a service business, the takeaway isn't panic. The "how much does it cost" and "why is this happening" blog posts that used to bring in early-stage visitors are worth less as traffic. The searches that turn into booked jobs, like "near me" and "[service] in [town]", still run mostly through the map pack and your Google Business Profile.

What to do about it

1. Treat your Google Business Profile as your real front door.

Every "near me" search in Rank.ai's scan showed the local map pack. Your hours, categories, photos, services, and reviews need to be complete and current, because for many customers your profile is the first thing they see, and sometimes the only thing.

2. Write cost and problem pages to be quoted, not just clicked.

AI Overviews show up on nearly every cost and problem question. You can't stop that, but you can give Google something to cite. Answer the question in the first couple of sentences, plainly, with real ranges and real factors for your area. Then explain why a professional matters. Seer Interactive found brands cited inside an AI Overview earned 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than brands left out. Seer notes this is a correlation, not proof that citation causes the lift (Seer Interactive).

3. Keep ranking. It still feeds the AI.

In Rank.ai's local scan, 53.2% of AI Overviews with sources cited the page ranking #1 organically (Rank.ai). Good SEO isn't obsolete. It's how you get into the answer.

4. Consider short videos.

59.7% of the local AI Overviews with sources in Rank.ai's scan cited YouTube. A two-minute video of you explaining what a repair involves, or what to expect at a first appointment, can earn a spot that a competitor's text page can't.

5. Measure calls and bookings, not just sessions.

If your website traffic dips while calls, direction requests, and form fills hold steady, you probably aren't losing business. Customers may simply be taking action straight from Google. Track the actions that make you money, and compare them month over month.

The bottom line

AI answers are taking over the research part of search. They haven't taken over the moment someone decides who to call. Local service businesses that win in 2027 will have a strong Google Business Profile, clear and quotable answers to the questions customers ask, and reporting that ties marketing to booked work instead of pageviews.
